Hello, my name is Star Alameda and I am the Reading Resource teacher here at E. B. De Silva Elementary School. I was born and raised in Hilo and a graduate of E. B. De Silva school and an alumni of Hilo High. I am married to my high school sweetheart, Kimo, and we have seven beautiful children.
Thank you for your permission to work with your child. I will be using the “Orton-Gillingham Approach”, which is a structured multi-sensory approach to reading. This approach is explicit and phonics based. It helps students recognized that certain letter combinations make their own sound and as the weeks go on, dividing of syllables are taught so that they are able to read multi-syllable words.
This approach is action oriented involving constant interaction. By using auditory, visual, and kinesthetic elements, all language skills taught are reinforced by having the student listen, speak, read, and write. Each lesson will cover 3 components. First component: learning/drills of the various phonemes (sounds) along with their rules/patterns. Second: reading with comprehension questions. Third: spelling, which includes sentence dictation allowing for practice with sentence formation and the practice of "red words" (words that can't be sounded out).
This year I have the privilege of working with Kindergarteners. Therefore, to start off, I will be stepping back a bit to work on letter naming, letter formation, single vowels and consonants.
I hope to have your support in having your child in school every day as each lesson is sequential and built upon the previous one.
